National Finals Rodeo to Implement Quarter-Point Scoring System in 2025
The 2025 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo will make history by introducing quarter-point scoring for the first time in its 66-year history, a change designed to provide more precise judging in roughstock events.
The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) Pro Officials will utilize the new system – implemented in bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, and bull riding – when judging events at the December rodeo in Las Vegas. “The ¼-point scoring system will be implemented at the NFR this year,” said Ron Howard, PRCA’s supervisor of Pro Officials. The system was successfully trialed at the Cinch Playoffs Governor’s Cup in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, this fall.
Under the new rules, judges will be able to use half points for scoring both the rider and the animal, potentially reducing the number of ties and more accurately determining high-marked stock scores. This change comes as the sport continues to evolve and seek greater fairness in competition. The 2025 Wrangler NFR is scheduled to take place December 4-13 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas; you can find more information about the event on the official NFR website.
Officials believe the quarter-point system will offer a more nuanced evaluation of performances, impacting rider rankings and championship outcomes. The PRCA has a long history of adapting to improve the sport, as detailed on their official website.
The PRCA plans to continue monitoring the system’s effectiveness and make adjustments as needed following the 2025 NFR.
