Nioh 3 introduces the Bakumatsu period as a new setting for the franchise, marking a significant shift in the game’s historical backdrop. This era, representing the end of the samurai age, is set in 19th-century Kyoto, where landmarks like Kiyomizu and Honnoji temples have been transformed by the influence of the Well. This move demonstrates the developers’ commitment to exploring new and compelling settings within the established Nioh universe.
Players will encounter not only new and fearsome yokai but also face off against the Shinsengumi, a military unit serving the shogunate. The Shinsengumi present a formidable challenge, equipped with modern weaponry such as firearms and Gatling guns, and utilize a combination of ranged and multi-directional attacks – a first for the Nioh series. This addition of modern weaponry promises to diversify combat encounters and challenge players’ tactical approaches.
“A future era is distorted beyond recognition after Kunimatsu, plunged into darkness, proclaimed himself the eternal shogun.
As Edo and almost all of Japan are engulfed by the Well, Kyoto, protected by the sacred Spirit Trees, stands as the last bastion, where the loyal continue their desperate resistance.
For the first time in the history of the franchise, the Bakumatsu period is set as a new stage for players to fight in Nioh 3. Representing the last era of the samurai, the action unfolds in 19th-century Kyoto, where the land and iconic places such as Kiyomizu and Honnoji temples have been devastated and transformed by the influence of the Well.
In addition to facing new and fearsome yokai, players will also take on the Shinsengumi, a military unit serving the shogunate. The troops of the Shinsengumi face enemies equipped with modern weaponry, such as firearms and Gatling guns, employing a combination of ranged and multi-directional attacks, something unprecedented in the history of the Nioh saga.
During their adventure, players will encounter a new cast of unique characters, specific to each era. In Kyoto of the Bakumatsu era, the protagonist Tokugawa Takechiyo will meet Takasugi Shinsaku, Okita Soji, and Tokugawa Yoshinobu, the fifteenth shogun of the Edo shogunate.”

About Nioh 3
The latest installment in the dark samurai action RPG series, Nioh, will challenge players to combine samurai and ninja combat styles as they battle fearsome yokai in an expansive open field. The game’s shift to an open-world format represents a significant evolution for the series, offering players greater freedom of exploration.
Nioh 3 tells the story of a young warrior poised to become the next Shogun during Japan’s turbulent Sengoku period. The game takes place in an open field, allowing players to explore freely while experiencing the signature tension found throughout the Nioh titles. Confront formidable yokai encounters, explore villages haunted by suspicious beings, face the daunting challenges of the Well, and enjoy new and exciting hostile environments as you fight to survive in the cursed realm!
A new feature in Nioh 3 is the ability to enjoy two distinct fighting styles: Samurai and Ninja. The Samurai style offers a gameplay experience similar to previous Nioh titles, with new actions like “Arts Exchange,” which boosts the power of martial arts, and “Deflect,” allowing players to block enemy attacks at the last moment, contributing to a series of intense and deadly face-to-face encounters.
On the other hand, the Ninja style features swift movements, such as dodging and aerial actions, giving players the advantage of attacking from outside the enemy’s reach using various Ninjutsu techniques depending on the battlefield situation. Players can utilize techniques like “Mist,” which leaves a clone after an attack, and “Evade,” which allows for close calls when dodging enemy attacks. Both techniques help players outmaneuver enemies while unleashing devastating quick attacks from behind.
Depending on enemy tendencies and scenarios, players can seamlessly switch between Samurai and Ninja techniques instantly at any time, or choose to fight using only one style continuously depending on the challenges and encounters ahead.
- An open field that challenges you at every turn – The game offers an open field that conveys the characteristic sense of tension of the “Nioh” series while allowing you to explore at your leisure. In this dark samurai world, you will face formidable yokai, explore sinister villages haunted by darkness, and struggle to cope with the terrifying presence of “the Purgatory.”
- Samurai and Ninja combat styles – Seamlessly switch between the two styles during combat, facing your enemies with the samurai style, and showcasing your agility and special techniques with the ninja style.
