“No Kings” Protests Held Across Triad, Nation Against Trump Presidency

Thousands of protesters gathered in cities across the United States, including multiple locations in North Carolina’s Triad region, today to demonstrate against the presidency of Donald Trump as part of the “No Kings” movement.

In Winston-Salem, a large crowd assembled on Main Street, filling the steps of City Hall and carrying signs. Demonstrators expressed concerns about the future of democracy and reproductive rights. Dianne B., who attended the protest in a unique frog costume inspired by similar displays in Portland, Oregon, stated, “Nothing is normal. We’re worried about losing democracy here, and elections not being free and fair.” The protests come amid ongoing debates about election integrity and the role of the presidency in a democratic society.

The demonstrations weren’t solely comprised of opposition voices; Ben Rowe of Winston-Salem, notably wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat, participated to support the movement’s core principle. “We haven’t had a king since 1776,” Rowe said, “And if we did have a king, we wouldn’t be able to be out here right now enjoying ourselves and our ability to let ourselves be heard.” Similar protests took place in Mount Airy, where Doris Cox emphasized the importance of speaking out even in a deeply Republican county, stating, “I think the people that we need to be reaching out to are the people that are in the middle that don’t really have a right or left. They believe in democracy.” You can learn more about the history of political protests in the United States here.

A counter-protest by Trump supporters also occurred diagonally across from the “No Kings” demonstration in Winston-Salem. A.J. Daoud, a Sergeant-at-Arms for the Republican National Convention, argued that people have become accustomed to less assertive leadership. “The problem that we run into that I’ve seen is that for multiple generations we’ve not had a strong, boisterous president since (Ronald) Reagan,” Daoud explained, adding his support for Trump’s policies on immigration, the Middle East, and the economy. Organizers have indicated plans for continued demonstrations and advocacy efforts in the coming weeks, aiming to maintain pressure on elected officials and raise awareness about their concerns.
