Norris Wins Action-Packed São Paulo Sprint, Extends Championship Lead

Lando Norris secured victory in a dramatic Sprint race at the São Paulo Grand Prix today, holding off a late charge from Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli amidst changing track conditions and multiple incidents.

The 24-lap Sprint was punctuated by a red flag after Oscar Piastri crashed on Lap 6, bringing Nico Hulkenberg and Franco Colapinto into the barriers shortly after. Norris maintained the lead through both the initial start and the restart, but faced intense pressure in the closing laps as his soft tires degraded. A subsequent heavy crash for Gabriel Bortoleto on the final lap led to a double yellow flag finish, confirming Norris’s win by a mere 0.845 seconds. This result is crucial as Norris aims to solidify his position in the driver standings with one race remaining.

George Russell completed the podium for Mercedes, while Max Verstappen salvaged valuable points with a fourth-place finish, keeping his championship hopes alive. Charles Leclerc finished fifth for Ferrari after overtaking Fernando Alonso late in the race, with Lewis Hamilton and Pierre Gasly rounding out the top eight. The Sprint Qualifying session earlier in the day saw Norris claim pole position with a time of 1m 09.243s, 0.097s ahead of Antonelli. “It was tough,” said Norris after the race. “It makes the win more rewarding when you have a race like this, especially with Kimi here – he was certainly not making my life easy. It’s one of those ones where you have to push because you know the guy behind is going to try and push that little bit more.” The race featured a mixed tyre strategy, with most of the field opting for medium compounds at the start, while Antonelli, Russell, and Verstappen began on softs. Autosport provides further analysis of the tyre strategies employed during the race.

Qualifying for the Grand Prix is scheduled to begin at 1500 local time today.
