Undersköterska döms till fängelse för grova stölder på Danderyds sjukhus
A Swedish nurse has been sentenced to two years in prison for multiple counts of grand theft and aggravated handling of stolen goods after stealing jewelry from vulnerable patients at Danderyds Hospital. The case, which spans from 2020 to 2025, underscores the importance of trust within the healthcare system and the devastating impact of such betrayals on patients.
The woman was convicted of several instances of grand theft, as well as aggravated handling of stolen goods, after stealing and reselling jewelry belonging to seriously ill patients. The first theft occurred in 2020, with the most recent taking place in 2025. Several of the victims were elderly and acutely ill, factors that contributed to the charges being considered “aggravated” due to the abuse of her position of trust.
During the trial, the nurse admitted to the methods used in two of the thefts, but claimed the rest of the jewelry she sold to pawn shops and gold dealers – totaling over one million Swedish krona – was her own. She explained that she received a large portion of the jewelry as a dowry when she married in her twenties. However, the court dismissed this explanation as an “afterthought,” noting it was a claim she only made during the trial.
“The court has concluded that she did not have any savings or valuables to gamble with; that is not likely,” said defense attorney Krister Björkdahl Jansson.
The convicted woman and her defense have not yet decided whether to appeal the verdict.

Prosecutors were unable to definitively prove the woman stole all the jewelry she sold to gold dealers, in part since much of it was melted down or sold and could not be traced back to specific police reports. However, financial transfers from gold shops linked the sales to the woman on 122 separate occasions.
She was too convicted of stealing silver items from her partner’s home, but acquitted on one count of aggravated handling of stolen goods related to a specific piece of jewelry.
Rätten: Domen speglar hänsynslösheten
The defense had argued for a suspended sentence with treatment for a gambling addiction, but Attunda District Court Chief Justice Louise Conradi stated that the woman’s gambling addiction did not influence the court’s sentencing decision.
“The two-year prison sentence reflects the ruthlessness and systematic nature of the nurse’s criminal activity,” Conradi said in a statement.
