Palm Springs Halloween Festival Expands to Two-Night Event Amid Rising LGBTQ+ Visibility
Palm Springs’ annual Halloween on Arenas festival will expand to a two-night event this year, featuring themed parties and performances, as the city continues to be a haven for LGBTQ+ expression and resistance.
Event producer Jeff Hocker, known for his work on Palm Springs’ Halloween and Cinco de Mayo celebrations, is spearheading the expansion, which includes “MASKED,” a costume-focused night on October 31st, and “UNMASKED,” a leather, fetish, and fantasy-themed party on November 1st. Hocker’s career began alongside LGBTQ+ rights pioneers like Cleve Jones and Gilbert Baker, and he emphasizes the importance of celebration as a form of protest. “Joy is resistance,” Hocker stated, adding that “visibility is resistance.”
The expanded festival coincides with Leather Pride Weekend and will feature performances by platinum-selling pop artist Dev, alongside DJs Hector Fonseca and Luciana. Culinary options will include offerings from local chefs and restaurants, such as TacoZarro and El Salvador Restaurant. Hocker noted the changing demographics of Palm Springs, with a younger population moving in and driving a more vibrant and inclusive culture; this shift is reflected in the evolving nature of his events. The city’s growing appeal to younger professionals is contributing to a diversifying economy, moving beyond its traditional image as a retirement destination. More information about the event can be found here.
Hocker, who also sings with the Palm Springs Gay Men’s Chorus, underscored the importance of community support, particularly for the trans community, at a time when LGBTQ+ rights are under attack nationally. He drew parallels to the early days of the AIDS crisis, emphasizing the power of art and collective action. As reported by them., anti-LGBTQ+ legislation has surged across the United States in recent years, making safe spaces like Palm Springs increasingly vital.
Organizers expect a significant turnout for the two-night event and will continue to advocate for inclusivity and visibility within the Palm Springs community.
