Palanga, a popular coastal resort city in Lithuania, saw a significant influx of visitors for New Year’s Eve celebrations, with hotels and restaurants reporting strong business. The celebrations were notably orderly and family-focused, according to reports from the area.
Restaurants and hotels offered a wide range of New Year’s packages, ranging from festive dinners starting at €150 per person to overnight stays with dinner for couples priced at €1200. Businesses along J. Basanavičiaus Street, including kiosks, cafes, and kebab shops, also reported brisk trade.
Observers noted the crowd was overwhelmingly well-behaved, with very few people openly carrying alcohol. The majority of visitors were families who specifically came to watch the midnight fireworks display.
Tens of thousands of people began gathering near the sea as early as 11 p.m. on December 31, quickly filling the bridge and beachfront areas. Some eager revelers began setting off firecrackers 15 minutes before midnight. As the official fireworks began, the crowd enthusiastically filmed and photographed the display, exchanging New Year’s greetings.
“We come every year to watch the fireworks. Since they stopped doing them in Klaipėda, we’ve made it a tradition to come to Palanga,” said Jurgos and Tomas, a family visiting from the port city of Klaipėda, with their children.
The fireworks display lasted approximately seven minutes. Following the show, the large crowd dispersed quickly and without incident, with reports indicating everyone was sober and in good spirits. The orderly departure highlights the family-friendly atmosphere of the event.
Traffic congestion was reported as visitors left Palanga, with narrow streets becoming heavily backed up. By 1 a.m., the resort town had largely returned to its normal, quieter pace.
The influx of visitors briefly transformed Palanga into a bustling summer destination, demonstrating the city’s appeal as a year-round tourist spot.
