Patrick Murray, ‘Only Fools and Horses’ Star, Dies at 68
Patrick Murray, best known for his role as Mickey Pearce in the beloved British sitcom Only Fools and Horses, has died at the age of 68, leaving fans mourning a character who became synonymous with the show’s comedic charm.
Murray first appeared in the series in 1983, in the episode “Healthy Competition,” and remained a recurring character through the show’s final Christmas special in 2003. Initially mentioned in earlier episodes as a rival to Rodney Trotter, the role was offered to Murray after a producer remembered his performance in a Pizza Hut commercial. He was described as “Del Boy lite”, a character who, like Del, frequently found his schemes going awry. “Mickey will try anything, but he’s not very trustworthy,” Murray once told author Steve Clark. “He’s always stitching Rodney up, and Del is always threatening to clump him for it.”
Born in Greenwich, south London, Murray began his acting career at age 15 and appeared in several television productions before landing the role of Mickey Pearce, including the controversial play Scum, and films like Quadrophenia. A 1989 storyline for Only Fools and Horses was even rewritten after Murray suffered a severe arm injury in an accident at home, incorporating the injury into the plot. His portrayal of Mickey Pearce helped solidify Only Fools and Horses as one of the most popular and enduring sitcoms in British television history.
Murray battled lung cancer and COPD in recent years, receiving a temporary all-clear in 2022 before the cancer returned. He is survived by his wife, Anong, and four children. Authorities have not yet released details regarding memorial arrangements.
