An investigation has been launched into allegations that Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell made false statements regarding the cost of renovations to the central bank’s headquarters in Washington, D.C. The scrutiny comes amid heightened political pressure on the Fed and its monetary policy decisions.
In a video address released Sunday, Powell indicated the inquiry is primarily linked to former President Donald Trump’s efforts to influence the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy. Trump has repeatedly criticized Powell, alleging the central bank was too slow to lower interest rates. While the Federal Reserve operates as an independent institution, reducing interest rates was a key promise during Trump’s presidential campaign.
A coalition of central bank leaders voiced strong support for the Federal Reserve and its chair. “We fully stand with the Federal Reserve System and its Chair Jerome Powell. Central bank independence is essential for price, financial and economic stability for the citizens we serve,” read a statement signed by the heads of the European Central Bank, as well as the central banks of England, Australia, Brazil, Denmark, South Korea, Canada, Switzerland, and Sweden, along with the chairman of the Bank for International Settlements.
Trump, however, denied any prior knowledge of the Justice Department’s investigation into the Federal Reserve during a statement on Sunday. The situation highlights the delicate balance between political influence and the independence of central banks, a cornerstone of global economic stability.
