Rangers Coach Sullivan Shuffles Lineup, Cites Detail as Key for Rookie Othmann
New York Rangers head coach Mike Sullivan made several lineup changes ahead of Tuesday night’s 2-0 victory over the Vancouver Canucks, opting for veteran players over younger prospects.
Brennan Othmann was a healthy scratch after one game, following the 5-1 loss to Calgary, with Jonny Brodzinski taking his place on the fourth line alongside Adam Edstrom and Sam Carrick. Sullivan explained the decision was rooted in Othmann’s need to focus on “attention to detail, reliability, knowing your job, doing your job, play away from the puck.” He added, “In the game the other night, there were some good things that he did. There were also some moments where attention to detail could have helped us keep the puck out of the net.” This move underscores the Rangers’ emphasis on defensive responsibility as they navigate a competitive season.
On defense, Urho Vaakanainen drew into the lineup for the first time since October 18, replacing Matthew Robertson. Sullivan stated the team has “seven defensemen that are very capable,” and the decision was based on recent performance, noting Robertson’s game hadn’t been “up to that level” in the last couple of contests. The Rangers currently hold a strong position in the NHL standings, and these adjustments aim to maintain that momentum. Additionally, Sullivan revealed that forward Matt Rempe, currently out with an upper-body injury, is expected to be sidelined “longer term.”
Vincent Trocheck, recovering from an upper-body injury, has resumed skating, offering a potential boost to the Rangers’ offensive capabilities. Meanwhile, the Canucks were without star defenseman Quinn Hughes due to a lower-body injury for the second consecutive game. For more on the Rangers, see the New York Daily News Rangers coverage. Sullivan indicated the team will continue to evaluate player performance and make decisions based on what gives them the best chance to win.
