A remarkably rare Volvo P1900, completed in August 1956, is heading to auction, presenting a unique possibility for collectors of early Volvo and automotive history. Produced during a brief two-year run-with just 44 units built in 1956 and 23 in 1957-the P1900 is a seldom-seen vehicle, and this particular example has changed hands eight times since its initial registration in January 1957. Valued between 900,000 and 1,050,000 Swedish kronor, the car represents a pivotal, if short-lived, chapter in Volvo’s design evolution.

The P1900, a limited-production model from Volvo’s early years, is attracting significant interest from enthusiasts. The vehicle retains much of its original interior, including red upholstery and period-specific detailing.

The current odometer reading is approximately 8,700 kilometers, though the total mileage is unconfirmed due to the odometer resetting at 10,000 kilometers. While the car starts and runs, a comprehensive service is recommended following a period of storage.

A Value Rooted in Automotive History

Due to the P1900’s limited production run – only 44 units were built in 1956 and 23 in 1957 – surviving examples are highly sought after by collectors. Bilweb Auctions has estimated the vehicle’s value between 900,000 and 1,050,000 Swedish kronor. This auction highlights the enduring appeal of rare and historically significant automobiles.

The car’s bodywork has been repainted at some point, but it largely maintains its original appearance. The engine has reportedly undergone minor modifications, a common practice for well-maintained classic cars.

The P1900 project was discontinued when Volvo’s new management determined the model didn’t fully align with the brand’s quality standards. However, the initiative paved the way for future endeavors, most notably the Volvo P1800, which would become a much more successful model.

A Piece of Volvo History Up for Sale

Today, the P1900 is remembered as a time when Volvo was willing to experiment. This particular vehicle represents a tangible example of the manufacturer pushing boundaries while remaining true to its engineering roots. For collectors, it’s a chance to acquire a car that not only tells a story but also bears the marks of innovative thinking.

The appearance of this model on the market consistently generates attention, and for good reason. When such a rare Volvo becomes available, it provides an opportunity to reflect on the automotive landscape of the 1950s – and how a short-lived project can have a lasting legacy.
