Suns Rookie Rasheer Fleming Impresses in Preseason Finale Against Lakers

Phoenix Suns rookie Rasheer Fleming showcased promising defensive skills in the team’s preseason finale against the Los Angeles Lakers yesterday, potentially solidifying his role as a key contributor this season.

Fleming, the 31st pick in the 2025 NBA draft, started opposite Lakers star Luka Dončić and registered nine points, five rebounds, a block, and a steal in 31 minutes of play. While Dončić scored 25 points, he also committed five turnovers. The 6-foot-9 forward with a 7-foot-5 wingspan attributed his success to instinct. “I got a deflection on Luka. Just doing little things like that I feel like gives me an advantage, and like I say with guarding guys, it’s definitely an advantage as well,” Fleming said. His defensive abilities are particularly noteworthy as the Suns look to improve their team defense, currently ranked 17th in the league according to NBA.com.

Fellow Suns newcomer Dillon Brooks has already influenced Fleming’s approach to defense. “I think one of things I’ve picked up on (Brooks) the most defensively is how uncomfortable he makes his defenders,” Fleming explained. “He doesn’t really give them too much space to operate.” Beyond Fleming, rookie Khaman Maluach is making a strong impression on teammates with his outgoing personality, often singing and playing music both on and off the court. The Suns finished their preseason schedule with a 3-1 record. Team officials stated they will now focus on finalizing the roster and preparing for the regular season opener on October 25th.
