Florida Coaching Search: Tim Tebow Emerges as Potential Candidate
Following the dismissal of Billy Napier, Florida is considering a wide range of candidates for its head coaching vacancy, with former Gators quarterback Tim Tebow now entering the conversation.
Robert Griffin III publicly advocated for Tebow’s hiring today, appearing on the Dan Patrick Show and stating, “I think they should hire Tim Tebow… If Tim Tebow goes into any home in Florida, those parents aren’t saying ‘Yep, sign me up. I’m coming.’” Griffin believes Tebow’s immense popularity within the state would be a significant recruiting advantage. He acknowledged the need for a strong supporting staff, but emphasized Tebow’s unparalleled pull with potential recruits.
While Tebow has no prior high-level coaching experience, his legacy at Florida – including two national championships and a Heisman Trophy – remains iconic. He was inducted into the Florida Football Ring of Honor in 2018. Griffin revealed he’d discussed the possibility with Tebow, who indicated he wasn’t actively pursuing a coaching position, but wasn’t entirely uninterested. Currently, Tebow co-hosts SEC Nation on ESPN, frequently appearing on campuses throughout the Southeastern Conference, including a recent visit to Gainesville for the game against Texas. The Gators’ coaching situation is particularly crucial given the competitive landscape of the Southeastern Conference.
Dan Patrick raised concerns about the difficulty of potentially firing a figure as beloved as Tebow, citing examples from college basketball. Athletic Director Scott Stricklin is expected to thoroughly evaluate all options, with Lane Kiffin of Ole Miss also considered a leading candidate. Stricklin’s office has not commented on specific candidates but confirmed the search is underway and aims to identify a coach who can restore the program to national prominence.
