Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Sam’s Club Super Greens Powder
At least 11 people across seven states have been sickened, with three hospitalized, due to salmonella infections linked to Member’s Mark Super Greens Powder Supplements sold at Sam’s Club stores nationwide and online.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced today that the illnesses, reported between May and September, are connected to moringa leaf powder within the supplement potentially contaminated with salmonella bacteria. Confirmed cases have been identified in Florida, Kansas, Michigan, North Carolina, New York, South Carolina, and Virginia. An investigation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) traced the source to a single lot of organic moringa leaf powder imported from Vallon Farm Direct in Jodhpur, India.
Health officials in Virginia and Michigan collected and tested samples from the homes of those affected, confirming the presence of salmonella. Moringa, a plant known for its nutritional value, is often dried and powdered for use in health supplements; however, contamination can occur during the growing or processing stages. Symptoms of salmonella poisoning include diarrhea, fever, severe vomiting, dehydration, and stomach cramps, and while most recover within a week, severe cases can require hospitalization, particularly in vulnerable populations.
