Riyadh is pushing back against international calls to move away from fossil fuels, with Saudi Energy Minister Prince abdulaziz bin Salman directly challenging the stated commitments of nations advocating for a phase-out. The comments, made at the Saudi-Russian Business Forum, come as global energy policy remains sharply divided despite increased investment in alternative sources [[3]] and Saudi Arabia’s own critically important investments in carbon capture technology [[1]]. The minister’s remarks underscore the kingdom’s position as a key oil producer and hint at a willingness to capitalize on continued global demand for hydrocarbons.
Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman asserted that nations publicly advocating for a phasing out of hydrocarbons are not acting in accordance with those claims.
Speaking at the Saudi-Russian Business Forum, the minister stated, “Those who were talking about phasing out are not phasing out; they are consuming every molecule of hydrocarbon and looking for more.”
He continued, “We are doing everything necessary to ensure that we will be there when they publicly admit that what they were talking about will be rolled back in the face of reality.”
