Sharp HealthCare Nurses Authorize Strike Amid Contract Dispute

San Diego, CA – Nurses at Sharp HealthCare voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike today, potentially impacting healthcare services across the region.

Members of the Sharp Professional Nurses Network and Sharp Chula Vista health care professionals announced the results of their vote yesterday, with 97% in favor of a walkout. Union officials have provided Sharp HealthCare with a 10-day notice, though bargaining sessions are currently scheduled for next Wednesday and Thursday. The nurses are seeking improved compensation, enhanced sick leave policies, and increased staffing levels to ensure patient safety.

“Ultimately, any strike would be about protecting our patients, our profession, and our licenses, and we don’t see Sharp taking these issues seriously enough,” the unions stated. “We have been losing nurses to better-paying hospitals,” they added, emphasizing the need to attract and retain qualified staff to maintain quality care. This dispute comes as hospitals nationwide grapple with significant workforce challenges.

Sharp HealthCare acknowledged the vote and stated it “reflects the significance of the issues being discussed at the bargaining table.” The health system noted that its current proposal includes significant pay increases – nurses currently earn an average of over $77 per hour plus benefits – as well as enhancements to extended sick insurance and retirement benefits. However, Sharp also cited financial pressures facing non-profit health systems like theirs. You can learn more about Sharp HealthCare’s services on their official website.

Officials say further negotiations are planned, and the outcome of those sessions will determine whether a strike will occur.
