Shein Bans Sex Dolls Globally After Child-Like Product Concerns

Online retail giant Shein has announced a global ban on the sale of all sex dolls following accusations that some products displayed on its platform had a “childlike appearance.”

The move comes after the French consumer watchdog raised concerns over the weekend regarding the description and categorization of the dolls, stating it suggested “child pornography.” Shein confirmed yesterday that it has permanently banned all seller accounts linked to the products and will implement stricter controls across its global platform, temporarily removing its adult products category as a precaution. Every listing and image related to the sex dolls has been removed, and the company plans a thorough review of seller practices.

Shein’s executive chairman, Donald Tang, stated, “The fight against child exploitation is non-negotiable for Shein. These were marketplace listings from third-party sellers – but I take this personally.” He added, “We are tracing the source and will take swift, decisive action against those responsible.” The controversy unfolded days before Shein was scheduled to open its first permanent retail outlet in Paris, where protests were held outside the BHV department store. This incident highlights the growing scrutiny faced by fast-fashion companies regarding their supply chains and product oversight – a concern that extends beyond labor standards.

France’s Directorate General for Competition, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Control initially flagged the issue on Saturday, prompting Shein to remove the listings and launch an investigation. The French finance minister had threatened to ban Shein from the country if the products remained for sale.

Shein says it has strengthened its keyword blacklist to prevent sellers from circumventing product listing restrictions and will continue to cooperate with authorities.
