Sinner Advances to China Open Final, Medvedev Retires in Semifinal

Jannik Sinner secured his place in the China Open final today, September 30, 2025, after defeating Alex de Minaur 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, while Daniil Medvedev retired from his semifinal match against Learner Tien due to what appeared to be cramping.

Sinner, aiming for his 11th consecutive victory over de Minaur, demonstrated a strong start but faced a challenge in the second set before regaining control in the decider. He will now face 19-year-old American Learner Tien in the final. Tien advanced after Medvedev stopped play while trailing 7-5, 5-7, 0-4. “I think (Medvedev) was cramping, I’ve been there and it’s not fun. All the best to him,” Tien said. “It’s not how you want to come through a match but I’m happy to be in the final.”

Medvedev had initially fought back from a two-break deficit to win the first set but visibly struggled physically, leading to a heated exchange with the umpire and ultimately his retirement. This marks Tien’s first ATP tour final appearance. Sinner, currently ranked fourth in the world, is looking to continue his impressive hardcourt form; he recently won the Beijing title in 2023. “I have one night to recover. I’m going to be fine,” Sinner stated. “In the finals, you have even more adrenaline and more will to play as best as you can.”

The final will pit the experienced Sinner against the rising talent of Tien, offering a compelling contrast in styles and experience. The winner will gain valuable ranking points as the ATP season heads towards its conclusion. Officials confirmed Medvedev will undergo evaluation to determine the extent of his injury.
