Spain is poised for a welcome change in weather as the December bridge holiday approaches, offering a respite from recent unstable conditions. The national weather agency, Aemet, forecasts a shift towards sunshine and milder temperatures coinciding with the celebrations of constitution day and the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, potentially boosting tourism after a period of disruptive rainfall [3]. While some northern and western regions may still experience lingering showers and fog, much of the country is expected to see a notable warming trend, with temperatures potentially rising by as much as 10 degrees Celsius.

Spain is bracing for a significant shift in weather conditions as the winter chill and recent rainfall give way to milder temperatures and sunshine just in time for the December bridge holiday. After several days of unstable weather across the Iberian Peninsula, the national weather agency is forecasting a period of stability coinciding with the celebrations of Constitution Day and the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.

The Agencia Estatal de Meteorología (Aemet) predicts that the showers of the past few days will be replaced by predominantly sunny skies throughout the weekend. This change will bring a noticeable increase in temperatures, potentially rising as much as 10 degrees Celsius compared to earlier this week. However, inland areas can expect morning fogs, which will be “dense and persistent” in valleys.

While much of the country will experience stable weather, some areas in western Spain will still see lingering rainfall at the start of the weekend. Showers are expected to be particularly noticeable in Galicia and along the Cantabrian coast, with a maritime storm anticipated in those regions.

Where Rain is Expected During the December Bridge

Despite the overall trend toward high-pressure systems and improving conditions, a lingering weather front will continue to bring precipitation to parts of Spain. These showers will be less persistent and weaker than those seen in recent days, primarily affecting northern regions and some inland areas. This shift in weather patterns is a welcome change for holiday travelers.

The heaviest rainfall is forecast for Galicia and other communities along the Cantabrian coast. Intense precipitation is also possible in the Central System, the upper Ebro valley, the Iberian System, and the Pyrenees. Snowfall is expected at elevations around 1,000 meters in northern areas, gradually rising to 2,000 meters throughout the day.

Low-level cloud cover will also be widespread, extending to cover the skies in communities such as Castile and León, Extremadura, Castile-La Mancha, Madrid, and Andalusia. Fog is also likely, potentially reducing visibility throughout the weekend and continuing at least until December 8, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.

Temperatures to Rise as December Bridge Begins: Up to 10 Degrees Warmer

Temperatures are expected to climb across much of Spain during the December bridge holiday due to the arrival of a warmer air mass. Aemet reports that temperatures will be “above normal” for this time of year, with some areas experiencing increases of up to 10 degrees Celsius compared to the beginning of the week.

Meteored indicates that Madrid, Castile and León, Galicia, La Rioja, Aragon, Castile-La Mancha, the Region of Murcia, and the Valencian Community are likely to see the most significant temperature anomalies, approaching 10 degrees Celsius.

On Friday, temperatures at midday are forecast to exceed 10 degrees Celsius across all communities. In parts of the Region of Murcia, the Valencian Community, Andalusia, Extremadura, Catalonia, and Galicia, temperatures could reach around 20 degrees Celsius over the weekend.

Saturday’s highs are expected to reach 25 degrees Celsius along the Mediterranean coast, particularly in municipalities of Valencia, Alicante, and Murcia. Elsewhere in Spain, temperatures are predicted to remain between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius, even in the northernmost parts of the peninsula.

Sunday is expected to continue the almost spring-like conditions, with mild temperatures. However, temperatures will be slightly lower than on Constitution Day, with milder values. Strong wind gusts could intensify the feeling of cold in many parts of northern Spain.
