Officer Matthew Torres of the Springfield Police Department has been recognized with the Life Saving Award and Mayor’s Certificate of Honor for his heroic actions on July 2, 2025.

Torres responded to an accident near South Wirt Ave. and East Stuart St., where a vehicle had struck the railroad tracks, ejecting Willie D. Crawford.

Crawford sustained a severe leg injury, with a bone protruding through his torn pant leg. Officer Torres applied a tourniquet to Crawford’s upper right leg, helping to slow blood loss.

The Springfield Fire Department arrived shortly after and transported Crawford to the hospital, where he was stabilized.

Torres’ quick thinking and decisive action were credited with saving Crawford’s life.
