Nintendo is already planning its next big-screen adventure. According to a leaked schedule, a third Super Mario film is slated for release in April 2028.
The news comes after the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which continues to perform well internationally. Currently, the film is number one in Japan, even as Sound! Euphonium, The Final Movie Part 1 anime has opened at number four, Anime News Network reports.
Universal Pictures Spain seemingly jumped the gun, initially listing the novel Nintendo film alongside Illumination – the studio behind the first Super Mario movie – and creators of Super Mario Galaxy. Diario AS detailed the initial listing.
While details remain scarce, masgamers.com reports that Nintendo and Illumination are preparing the project, based on Universal’s internal calendar.
The announcement of a third film underscores the partnership between Nintendo and Illumination, and signals continued confidence in the Super Mario franchise’s potential on the big screen. Indigo Geek and Softonic both report the film is currently scheduled for release on April 12, 2028.
