Ukraine Signals Escalation of Strikes on Russian Energy Infrastructure
Ukraine is preparing further strikes targeting Russian energy infrastructure, potentially causing widespread power outages, according to a senior Ukrainian military official.
Robert “Madyar” Brovdi, commander of Ukraine’s Drone Systems Forces, announced on Facebook today that upcoming attacks utilizing long-range strike assets, including drones, will compel Russian regions to adjust to consistent disruptions in power supply. “Blackouts are not scary. They’re just a bit inconvenient… The birds of the Drone Systems Forces, together with other components of Ukraine’s deep strike capabilities, promise you a rapid, if somewhat forced, adaptation,” Brovdi stated. He characterized Ukrainian drones as unpredictable and operating outside of fixed schedules. He also noted increasing fuel shortages and dwindling gas and oil reserves within Russia.
This announcement follows a significant power outage in Moscow Oblast yesterday, which Russian media attributed to drone attacks on energy facilities. Ukraine’s military intelligence (HUR) also reported striking a key Russian military fuel pipeline in Moscow Oblast, disabling a critical supply route for the Russian army. The targeted Koltsevoy (Ring) pipeline, a 400-kilometer artery supplying gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel from refineries in Ryazan, Nizhny Novgorod, and Moscow, had all three major fuel lines destroyed simultaneously near Ramensky district, southeast of Moscow. According to HUR, the pipeline was capable of transporting up to 3 million tons of jet fuel annually, representing a “serious blow” to Russia’s military logistics and the economy of the Moscow Oblast. Disruptions to fuel supplies could significantly hamper Russian military operations.
Despite the presence of anti-drone nets and armed security, HUR stated the pipeline infrastructure was successfully disabled. Further details on the ongoing conflict and its impact can be found at the Council on Foreign Relations. Ukraine continues to seek advanced weaponry and support from international allies, as detailed in recent reports from the U.S. Department of Defense.
Ukrainian officials have indicated that these strikes will continue as part of their ongoing defense strategy.
