Stormy Weather Batters New York, Tornado Possible; Another Nor’easter Looms
New York is experiencing gale-force winds, heavy rainfall, and the possibility of a tornado this Monday morning, with forecasters also warning of a potential Nor’easter developing in time for Halloween.
A fast-moving storm arrived in the tri-state area late yesterday and is bringing a band of moderate to heavy rain expected to last through the morning. The National Weather Service (NWS) warns that a brief tornado is possible amid severe winds, with gusts up to 40 mph and isolated thunderstorms. “Gusty winds and isolated thunderstorms cannot be ruled out with the line. Secure any loose outdoor objects and decor!” the NWS stated. Southern Connecticut, northeast New Jersey, and southeast New York are expected to be most affected, potentially experiencing downed tree limbs and power lines, as well as minor urban flooding.
Adding to the concern, forecasters are tracking a developing storm system that could bring similar conditions to the East Coast between October 29 and November 1. This setup, created by blocking over Hudson Bay and a building ridge over the northern Rockies, is conducive to powerful coastal events. As PIX 11 meteorologist Mike Masco explained, “Even in late October, it can still bring strong, wind-driven coastal events similar to what was experienced a week ago.” This comes after a powerful Nor’easter impacted the region earlier this month, causing widespread disruption and prompting states of emergency. A coastal flood advisory is currently in effect for Southwest Suffolk, Southeast Suffolk, Southern Queens, and Southern Nassau Counties, with potential inundation of up to half a foot above ground level in vulnerable coastal areas. A small craft advisory is also in place for Long Island Sound and surrounding bays until 2 a.m. Tuesday. These conditions pose a risk to maritime activities and coastal infrastructure; residents are urged to stay informed about changing conditions and heed warnings from local authorities. Officials are continuing to monitor both the current storm and the developing Nor’easter, and residents are advised to stay tuned for further updates and potential advisories.
