Tory Lanez’s Request for Additional Deposition Denied in Megan Thee Stallion Civil Case
A judge yesterday denied Tory Lanez’s request for a third deposition in the ongoing civil case brought by Megan Thee Stallion, a development that could impact his legal strategy as he continues to appeal his criminal conviction.
Los Angeles County Judge Lisette M. Reid rejected the request in a filing on Thursday, October 30, stating it was “unclear” how another deposition would affect his criminal appeal. According to the judge’s reasoning, the proposed deposition focused on Lanez’s relationship with defendant Kelsey Cooper, and not with Megan Thee Stallion herself. “Thus, the court does not see how testimony regarding Mr. Peterson’s communications and relationship with defendant would serve to prejudice his criminal appeal,” Judge Reid wrote, referring to Lanez by his legal name, Daystar Peterson.
The judge also affirmed that Lanez’s Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination would be protected during a previously ordered deposition, allowing him to invoke it “on a question-by-question basis.” This civil suit stems from the 2020 shooting incident where Lanez was found guilty of shooting Megan Thee Stallion; the outcome of this civil case could result in significant financial repercussions for the artist. Further complicating the legal landscape, individuals connected to Lanez, such as DJ Akademiks and streamer Adin Ross, have also been involved in legal proceedings related to the case, including depositions and a disputed subpoena attempt involving a mariachi band.
Lanez is currently pursuing an appeal of his criminal conviction, and officials stated he can continue to utilize his Fifth Amendment rights as the civil case proceeds.
