Lead and Cadmium Found in Popular Protein Powders, Investigation Reveals

A new investigation has found concerning levels of toxic heavy metals, including lead and cadmium, in many popular protein powders and shakes sold across the nation.

Investigators tested 23 top-selling products – ranging from vegan blends to whey-based shakes – and discovered that over two-thirds contained more lead in a single serving than experts recommend consuming in an entire day. The study, a follow-up to a similar investigation conducted 15 years ago, indicates the problem of contamination has worsened. “We were really surprised to learn that not only has the problem of contamination with heavy metals like lead gotten worse since we last tested these powders,” said Paris Martineau, the investigative reporter. “It seems to be kind of more omnipresent.”

The testing encompassed dairy, beef, and plant-based protein powders, with plant-based options exhibiting the highest levels of contamination. Specifically, plant-based powders contained, on average, nine times as much lead as dairy-based powders and twice as much as beef-based ones. This is particularly concerning as the supplement industry currently lacks federal limits for heavy metal content, meaning manufacturers aren’t required to prove product safety before sale; learn more about dietary supplement regulation from the FDA.

Experts recommend prioritizing protein intake from whole food sources like yogurt, eggs, beans, and lean meats. The presence of these contaminants raises concerns about potential long-term health effects, especially for frequent consumers of protein supplements. Officials are urging consumers to be aware of the potential risks and are calling for increased regulation of the supplement industry to ensure product safety.
