Beloved German actor Udo Kier has died at the age of 81. His partner, Delbert McBride, confirmed the news to Variety on Sunday.
Kier amassed an impressive filmography of over 200 credits throughout his decades-long career, collaborating with iconic figures like Andy Warhol, Madonna, and Lars von Trier. He also appeared in Václav Marhoul’s Czech film, *The Painted Bird*, portraying the character of Miller.
“Kier was known for his piercing gaze,” The Guardian notes, adding that he frequently played villains, monsters, and creatures, often taking on roles as vampires or Nazis. His work spanned film, television, music videos, and video games.
Early in his career, Kier starred in Paul Morrissey’s films *Body for Frankenstein* and *Blood for Dracula*, both produced by Warhol. According to *Variety*, “both were subversive, sensual reinterpretations of classic Hollywood monsters, with Kier playing with a spooky, yet comically awkward, flair.”
The success of those films led to collaborations with acclaimed screenwriter and director Rainer Werner Fassbinder on projects like the crime thriller *Third Generation*, the television drama *Bolwieser*, and the World War II-set film *Lili Marleen*.

In 2021, Kier starred in *Swan Song* alongside Jennifer Coolidge.
At the Berlin Film Festival, Kier met director Gus Van Sant, who introduced him to American audiences in 1991 with the coming-of-age film *My Own Private Idaho*, where he appeared opposite Keanu Reeves. This role helped solidify his presence in independent cinema.
Among Lars von Trier’s works, Kier appeared in *Europa*, *Breaking the Waves*, *Dogville*, *Melancholia*, *Nymphomaniac*, and the television series *The Kingdom*.
Kier also established himself in Hollywood around the same time, taking on supporting roles in blockbuster hits like *Armageddon* and *Blade*. He even lent his talents to music videos for Madonna, appearing in visuals for “Erotica” and “Deeper and Deeper.”
