US Men’s Soccer Draws Ecuador 1-1 in Austin Friendly
The United States Men’s National Team fought to a 1-1 draw against Ecuador in a spirited friendly match played yesterday at Q2 Stadium in Austin, Texas, with Folarin Balogun scoring the equalizer in the 71st minute.
Trailing after Enner Valencia’s 24th-minute goal for Ecuador, the U.S. team increased its attacking pressure in the second half, ultimately finding the back of the net through Balogun, assisted by Malik Tillman. Coach Mauricio Pochettino praised his team’s resilience, stating, “We were so brave in trying to go forward, try to find the space.” He added, “I think we improved in the second half. I think we dominate the game in all the aspects.” This match serves as a key preparation point for the team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which the U.S. will co-host.
However, the match wasn’t without its setbacks, as several players are dealing with injuries. Alejandro Zendejas will return to his club, Club America, due to a knee issue, and Fulham’s Antonee Robinson’s availability remains uncertain. AC Milan’s Christian Pulisic, recovering from an ankle problem, played only 17 minutes as a substitute, and Pochettino said they will “see if he can be available again” for Tuesday’s friendly against Australia. Since their loss to Mexico in the summer’s Gold Cup final, the U.S. has recorded one win, one draw, and one loss. Pochettino indicated the team will continue preparations with friendlies against Paraguay and Uruguay in November.
