Vienna Weather: Colder, Rain & Snow Expected This Week

A dramatic shift in weather is forecast for the region this week, bringing a return to colder temperatures and the possibility of significant snowfall.according to Geosphere Austria, a period of rain will give way to sunshine before a significant drop in temperatures arrives Thursday, lowering the snow line to as low as 400 meters in some areas. Residents should prepare for a transition to winter-like conditions as precipitation increases thru the end of the week.

A significant shift in weather patterns is expected this week, bringing rain followed by sunshine and a considerable drop in temperatures. The snow line will also fall dramatically, according to Geosphere Austria.

        <p>Monday will be dominated by overcast skies and frequent, sometimes heavy, rainfall.  During the afternoon, precipitation in the north and along the northern Alpine foothills will transition to showers, with occasional breaks. The snow line will fall from north to south to between 500 and 1,200 meters by evening. Morning temperatures will range from 1 to 9 degrees Celsius, with highs reaching 5 to 14 degrees Celsius.</p>

        <p>On Tuesday, remaining clouds along the northern Alpine foothills and in the north will dissipate quickly, and remnants of disturbances from the night will clear in the southeast during the morning.  Sunshine will then prevail throughout the day. Winds will be moderate in the east, becoming brisk in exposed locations from the west.  Early temperatures will be between minus 5 and plus 2 degrees Celsius, with daytime highs reaching no more than plus 2 to 8 degrees Celsius.</p>

        <p>Wednesday will begin with widespread sunshine across the country. Skies will be mostly clear, with only a few harmless veils of clouds passing overhead. These clouds will cause little disruption. More clouds will arrive from the south in the evening, but conditions will remain dry. Winds will be light and variable.  In the far east, moderate gusts will come from the southeast to south. Early temperatures will range from minus 10 to minus 1 degrees Celsius, with daytime highs between plus 1 and 7 degrees Celsius.</p>

        <p>Thursday will start with some sunny intervals in the eastern half of the country, before becoming obscured by dense clouds from the west.  Rain is expected in Vorarlberg and Tyrol in the morning, falling as snow above 400 to 700 meters.  By evening, the precipitation will spread, and rain and snow are expected west of a line between Upper Austria and Carinthia. The snow line on the southern Alpine slopes will remain above 1,000 meters. The east and southeast will remain the driest and experience periods of sunshine. Winds will be light to moderate from the south to west. Early temperatures will be minus 7 to 0 degrees Celsius. Daytime highs will reach plus 1 to 9 degrees Celsius.</p>

        <p>Friday will see dense clouds covering the entire country, bringing some precipitation.  Only in the far north will conditions remain regionally dry. The snow line will be widespread between 300 and 500 meters, and between 600 and 800 meters in the south. Winds will be light to moderate from the west to north.  Temperatures in the morning will range from minus 5 to plus 3 degrees Celsius, with daytime highs between minus 1 and plus 6 degrees Celsius.</p>
