Wolves Sack Manager Vitor Pereira After Dismal Start to Season
Wolverhampton Wanderers have dismissed head coach Vitor Pereira following a winless start to the Premier League season, culminating in a 3-0 defeat against Fulham yesterday.
The loss at Craven Cottage came after a first-half red card for defender Emmanuel Agbadou and was met with chants of “you’re getting sacked in the morning” from travelling supporters. Wolves have only two points from their first ten Premier League games, leaving them eight points from safety – a precarious position as no team has ever survived with so few points at this stage of a Premier League season. This sacking raises further questions about the club’s direction and potential relegation battle.
Pereira’s departure comes just 45 days after he signed a new three-year contract despite the team’s initial struggles, having lost their first four league games. The former Porto boss described Saturday’s defeat as “the worst” of his tenure, stating, “Today I felt my team physically were not in condition, not at the level to face Fulham.” He added, “Tactically with some mistakes, technically we were not there at the best level, we lost a lot of passes.” The club’s summer recruitment has also come under scrutiny, with new signings failing to deliver goals. Executive chairman Jeff Shi stated, “Vitor and his team worked tirelessly for Wolves and helped guide us through a challenging period last season, for which we are grateful.” He continued, “Unfortunately, the start to this season has been a disappointment and, despite our strong desire to give the head coach time and matches to find an improvement, we have reached a point where we must make a change.” Under-21 head coach James Collins and U18 head coach Richard Walker will oversee training while the club searches for a replacement, as detailed in this official club statement.
The club confirmed that all eight of Pereira’s backroom staff have also left, and the search for a new first-team head coach is underway.
