Raphael Schremmer, 35, of Wickede, is battling an aggressive form of bone cancer. His family is now seeking public financial assistance to help cover mounting medical expenses.
The Schremmers chose to live in Wickede since it was centrally located between Raphael’s hometown of Menden and Denise’s hometown of Ense. The Ruhr region community has become their home, further enriched three years ago with the arrival of their daughter, Joleen. However, their family happiness has been overshadowed for the past two years by Raphael’s diagnosis of a chondrosarcoma, now in its advanced stages.
The cancer was initially discovered on a rib. The first surgery involved severing nerves, followed by subsequent procedures to remove the tumor and several ribs. Treatment options are limited, as this type of cancer is known to be resistant to chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
Since Raphael’s diagnosis and initial surgery in August 2024, the family’s life has been dramatically altered. Hospital stays, therapies, and constant worry about the health of the craftsman have replaced everyday life and work. Understanding the challenges faced by families navigating serious illness is crucial for building supportive communities.
Financial and Emotional Strain
While Denise continues to work part-time, Raphael is no longer able to practice his trade as a plasterer. He has been granted full disability benefits, resulting in a significant reduction in the family’s monthly income.
Beyond the physical impact on Raphael, and the emotional toll on the entire family, the situation presents a significant financial burden. “In addition to medical treatment, Notice many additional costs – for trips to clinics, medication, aids, and sometimes as well for alternative therapies that give us hope,” Denise explained.
To address these challenges, the family has launched an online fundraising campaign through “GoFundMe.” “Every contribution helps us to position aside financial worries and focus our energy on our journey together,” Denise said.
Precious Time Not to Be Wasted on Financial Concerns
Despite maintaining a positive outlook, the family acknowledges the limited time remaining. Raphael hopes to witness his daughter Joleen’s first day of school.
The remaining time is too valuable to be consumed by financial anxieties related to the illness. The family is seeking support. Denise Schremmer stated, “We are infinitely grateful for any help, sharing, and expression of sympathy.”
