John Witherspoon Estate Listed for $4.6 Million

The estate of the late comedian John Witherspoon has been placed on the market for $4.625 million, offering a rare opportunity to own a sprawling property steeped in Hollywood history.

Located in the Sherman Oaks neighborhood of Los Angeles, the 25,000-square-foot compound encompasses two addresses and features five bedrooms and seven bathrooms. According to Angela Witherspoon, the late comedian’s widow, the property holds decades of family memories, including raising their two sons and hosting significant events. “We’ve made so many memories here over the years…We’ve held countless gatherings, from Christmas parties to my husband John’s celebration of life, which was attended by friends like David Letterman, Chris Tucker, and DJ’d by Shawn Wayans,” she said. The estate’s secluded setting provides privacy while remaining accessible to the city and nearby attractions like Malibu Canyon and Downtown Los Angeles.

The property has also served as a backdrop for high-profile events, including a successful 2020 fundraiser for then-candidate Kamala Harris, dubbed “Cookout for Kamala,” and the wedding of family friend Madison McFerrin. More recently, it was used as a filming location for the upcoming movie “Villa Hollywood,” starring Angela Witherspoon alongside Maria Russell, Rhonda Shear, and Aniya Wayans – marking the film debut of the latest member of the Wayans family. Witherspoon’s passing in 2019 left a significant void in the comedy world; he was known for his roles in films like Friday and his frequent appearances on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.

Angela Witherspoon intends to downsize and pursue more travel opportunities following the sale. The estate is listed by Lucas Arias and Isaiah Arias of the A&A Team at Compass. Agents anticipate strong interest given the property’s size, location, and celebrity provenance.
