Phoenix Mercury Coach Nate Tibbetts Ejected From WNBA Finals Game 4

Phoenix Mercury head coach Nate Tibbetts was ejected from Game 4 of the WNBA Finals against the Las Vegas Aces today after receiving two technical fouls during the third quarter.

The incident occurred as Tibbetts argued a foul call against Mercury guard Monique Akoa Makani, reportedly approaching referee Gina Cross in a manner that led to the immediate assessment of two technical fouls. Tibbetts expressed disbelief before being escorted off the court. This ejection adds another layer of scrutiny to officiating during the 2025 WNBA Playoffs.

Following the ejection, Mercury star Kahleah Copper addressed the situation, stating, “I think the refs aren’t doing a good job tonight, I’m sorry,” in an on-court interview with ESPN. “But we’ve just got to keep our heads.” The Mercury are currently facing elimination in the series.

This is not the first controversial ejection of a coach during these playoffs; Minnesota Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve was ejected and subsequently suspended during the semifinals after arguing a call following an injury to Napheesa Collier. Officials have not yet released a statement regarding the ejection, and the game continued with assistant coaches assuming Tibbetts’ responsibilities on the sideline.
