Apple Reorganizes Divisions Ahead of COO Jeff Williams’ Retirement

Apple is restructuring some of its key divisions, placing health and fitness initiatives under the leadership of Services chief Eddy Cue and shifting Apple Watch software oversight to Software Engineering head Craig Federighi, changes occurring as longtime Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams prepares to retire.

Yesterday, reports indicated the move aims to consolidate Apple’s efforts in the health and wellness space, potentially paving the way for a new subscription service called Health+. This service is expected to leverage artificial intelligence to provide users with personalized recommendations regarding nutrition, exercise, and sleep. Apple has been increasingly focused on health features, and this reorganization signals a deeper commitment to the sector.

Federighi will now oversee the Apple Watch operating system, while Cue will manage the combined health and fitness divisions. Both executives have extensive histories with the company and have played pivotal roles in launching some of Apple’s most successful products. In July, Apple announced Williams’ planned retirement, with Sabih Kahn taking over operational responsibilities in a transition that began that month. CEO Tim Cook stated at the time that Williams “helped to create one of the most respected global supply chains in the world.” You can learn more about Apple’s leadership on their official website.

Despite the reorganization, Apple’s wearables, home, and accessories category – which includes the Apple Watch – saw a 9% revenue decline in the most recent quarterly earnings, falling to $7.4 billion, while services revenue continued to grow, increasing 13% to $27.4 billion, according to Statista. Apple officials have stated Williams will continue to support the company’s design team and health initiatives through the remainder of the year.
