Seattle University Women’s Basketball Enters New Era in West Coast Conference
Seattle University’s women’s basketball team is embarking on its first season in the West Coast Conference (WCC) following an open practice held yesterday, October 2, signaling a significant shift for the program.
Head Coach Skylar Young views the move to the WCC as a bold statement, asserting, “I truly believe it’s the best basketball conference on the West Coast. We’re going in there to compete because that’s what you do in that league.” The Redhawks’ roster has undergone substantial changes with the addition of international recruits and experienced transfers, joining three returning players. This transition comes as the WCC is increasingly recognized for its competitive basketball programs, potentially raising Seattle U’s national profile.
Freshman guard Chloe Emanga, who recently competed in the European Championship, expressed her excitement about joining the team, stating, “I’m so excited that the games start soon…It really felt like family when I met the coaches.” Sophomore guard Lucy Larson highlighted the improved team chemistry, noting, “I love this group of girls…We’re gonna take over the WCC.” The team’s focus on selfless play aligns with principles discussed in resources on NCAA Women’s Basketball.
Coach Young emphasized the importance of chemistry, stating that the team’s natural bonding off the court will translate to success on the court. With a core of returning players like Senior Forward Tamia Stricklin providing leadership, the Redhawks aim to consistently compete and represent Seattle University and the city with pride. The team will now focus on preparation as they gear up for their inaugural WCC season, with Coach Young prioritizing consistent effort and a strong representation of the university.
