Elon Musk’s XChat app has climbed to the top spot on the US App Store, surpassing OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude shortly after its iPhone launch.
According to a post shared by Nikita Bier, head of product at X, the App Store screenshot showed XChat in first place, followed by ChatGPT second and Claude third. Bier reposted the chart with the caption “Still got it” on April 25, 2026.
XChat, built in Rust with what X describes as Bitcoin-style encryption, offers end-to-end encrypted chats, voice and video calls, and file transfers without requiring a phone number. Group chats support up to 481 members, with plans to increase the limit to 1,000 in the coming weeks.
The integrated Grok assistant allows users to summarize files and draft messages directly within conversations. The app is designed to work seamlessly with X.com, providing a completely private messaging experience.
This launch represents an early milestone in Musk’s broader strategy to integrate messaging, AI capabilities, and cryptocurrency-ready payments into a unified platform under the X brand. X has indicated that its X Money wallet, developed in partnership with Visa, will be rolled out shortly after the messaging app’s release.
Download links for iOS were shared via XChat’s official account, directing users to the App Store for installation.
