YouTube TV, Disney Nearing Agreement to Restore ESPN, But Key Dispute Remains

YouTube TV and Disney are reportedly close to a deal that would restore ESPN and other Disney-owned channels to the streaming platform, ending a blackout that began on October 30th and has impacted millions of subscribers.

The sticking point in negotiations centers on the cost of Disney’s “ancillary non-sports networks,” including Freeform, FX, and National Geographic, according to sources familiar with the discussions. Disney packages its networks together during carriage negotiations, arguing this offers a discount, while distributors like YouTube TV seek to avoid paying for channels with lower viewership as audiences migrate to dedicated streaming services. This dispute is particularly significant as cord-cutting continues to reshape the media landscape.

The involvement of top executives from both companies—Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Disney CEO Bob Iger—signals the seriousness of the negotiations, as does the participation of Disney’s entertainment co-chairs Dana Walden and Alan Berman, and ESPN chair Jimmy Pitaro. Federal Communications Commission Chair Brendan Carr urged a swift resolution earlier this week, stating on X, “Google and Disney need to get a deal done and end this blackout. People should have the right to watch the programming they paid for — including football. Get it done!” YouTube TV previously offered a $20 credit to subscribers affected by the loss of “Monday Night Football” and college football games; alternatives like DIRECTV offer similar channel lineups.

Disney’s quarterly earnings report, scheduled for Thursday afternoon, may be a motivating factor in reaching a resolution. Negotiations have been complicated by a conflict of interest involving Justin Connolly, YouTube TV’s global head of media and sports, who previously worked at Disney and was recused from the talks. Officials remain optimistic a deal can be reached, but no agreement is currently in place.
