Sania Mirza Discusses Pressure on Son Izhaan to Follow in Parents’ Athletic Footsteps
Former tennis champion Sania Mirza revealed today that she has already spoken with her seven-year-old son, Izhaan Mirza Malik, about navigating the expectations that come with being the child of high-achieving parents.
Mirza shared that she faced questions about Izhaan’s future athletic pursuits – specifically whether he would choose tennis or cricket – even before his birth. “I understand where that’s coming from…but it’s just ridiculous that someone who isn’t even on earth yet was expected to choose between two sports!” she stated in a recent interview. While Izhaan currently plays football for the U-8 Juventus team, Mirza emphasized the importance of allowing him to pursue his own interests without feeling obligated to follow in her or his father, cricketer Shoaib Malik’s, footsteps. This conversation highlights the increasing scrutiny faced by children of celebrities and athletes.
Mirza acknowledged the unique challenges of raising a child in the public eye, noting that Izhaan understands his family’s life differs from those of his classmates whose parents hold traditional nine-to-five jobs. “I’ve already sat him down and spoken to him about the pressure that the world is going to impose on him,” she explained. “I’ve explained to him that it’s okay to lose and that it’s okay to not play a sport if he doesn’t want to.” Understanding the impact of fame on children is a growing area of discussion among psychologists; resources like those offered by the Child Mind Institute provide guidance for parents.
Mirza also stated she is focused on normalizing Izhaan’s life as much as possible, while accepting that a completely “normal” childhood isn’t realistic given her and Malik’s public profiles. She recently launched a podcast, Serving It Up With Sania, where she discusses various aspects of her life and career. Officials have not commented further on Mirza’s statements, but the discussion is expected to continue as Izhaan grows up in the spotlight.
