Lead Found in Two-Thirds of Tested Protein Powders and Shakes

An investigation revealed that more than two-thirds of 23 tested protein powders and ready-to-drink shakes contain levels of lead exceeding daily limits considered safe by food safety experts, raising concerns about potential health risks for consumers.

Consumer Reports’ testing found that some products contained up to 10 times the recommended daily intake of 0.5 micrograms of lead. Plant-based protein options, on average, exhibited higher lead levels than dairy or animal-based products, though several dairy-based options also showed concerning results. Exposure to high levels of lead can lead to anemia, hypertension, and cardiovascular issues, according to the World Health Organization.

Several manufacturers responded to the report, with Garden of Life stating, “At Garden of Life, we carefully select ingredients to meet our high standards for quality and safety…Our products are tested for heavy metals, and the levels are below established food safety thresholds.” Huel similarly noted that the Consumer Reports approach reflects a “uniquely cautious regulation” compared to international safety standards, and Optimum Nutrition shared that their products are made in compliance with FDA guidelines and tested by accredited third-party labs. Consumer Reports categorized the tested products into those to avoid, limit, and those considered safe for occasional use, with seven brands identified as containing low enough lead levels for daily consumption. The findings underscore the need for greater oversight and transparency in the supplement industry, as consumers increasingly rely on these products to meet their dietary needs.

Officials stated that further investigation and potential regulatory action are being considered in light of these findings.
