Herbalife Nutrition Opens $7 Million R&D Center in Torrance, California
Herbalife Nutrition Ltd. today announced the opening of a $7 million research and development center on its Torrance manufacturing campus, dedicated to advancing sensory science and quality control for new nutrition products.
The 8,600-square-foot facility, which began construction in February, is now staffed with over 40 researchers and equipped with advanced analytical technologies including liquid chromatography, gas chromatography, plasma mass spectrometry, and DNA-based testing equipment. This investment reflects a growing trend in the health and wellness sector towards increased scientific rigor and product validation. The new center is part of Herbalife’s “seed-to-feed” quality management system, designed to ensure ingredient traceability and product safety.
“At Herbalife, our rigorous, science-backed approach fuels innovation and guarantees that every product meets the highest standards of quality, safety and effectiveness,” said Troy Hicks, the company’s chief operating officer, in a statement. The Torrance center joins existing Herbalife research labs in Lake Forest, California, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and six international locations including China, Brazil, India, and the United Kingdom. Herbalife, which reported nearly $5 billion in revenue last year, recently transitioned leadership with Stephan Gratziani becoming CEO in May, succeeding Michael Johnson.
The expansion of research and development capacity in Southern California is notable, as other major health science companies are also investing in the region; Amgen recently broke ground on a $600 million R&D facility in Thousand Oaks, and the California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy is under construction at UCLA. Herbalife officials stated the new center will accelerate the development of health and wellness solutions for its global network of distributors.
