NYC Building Managers Issue Holiday Safety Reminders to Residents
New York City building managers are urging residents to take precautions with holiday decorations to prevent damage, safety hazards, and potential legal issues, as the volume of incidents typically rises during the festive season.
According to a recent advisory, seemingly harmless decorations like pumpkin stickers and festive doormats can cause significant problems. Building professionals warn that stickers can remove paint upon removal, requiring full repainting rather than simple touch-ups, and decorative doormats often violate city fire codes. “Those adorable mats outside your door? Violations waiting to happen,” the advisory states. Real pumpkins can also stain wood floors if not placed on protective trays.
The advisory also addresses Christmas trees and open flames. Residents are encouraged to bag live trees before bringing them indoors, place a basin underneath to catch needles and sap, and avoid dragging them through hallways. For menorahs and candles, the recommendation is to use LED alternatives to avoid wax spills, fire hazards, and false alarms. Proper package management is also emphasized, with a request to promptly collect deliveries to prevent hallway obstructions and fire risks – a growing concern with the increase in online shopping.
Building managers are also requesting that all holiday decorations be removed within ten days after the holidays to prevent mold growth, fire hazards, and potential citations. As NYC Building Code regulations become more stringent, proactive measures are crucial for maintaining building safety and avoiding costly repairs.
Officials stated they hope these reminders will help ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday season for all New Yorkers.
