Israeli Airstrikes Escalate Tensions in Southern Lebanon, Prompting Evacuations
Israeli jets conducted airstrikes on several towns in southern Lebanon today, escalating near-daily exchanges with Hezbollah and prompting evacuation warnings to residents.
The Israeli military warned residents of Tayba, Teir Debba, Aita al-Jabal, Zawtar al-Sharqiyah, and Kfar Dounin to evacuate 500 meters from residential buildings, claiming these areas were being used by Hezbollah. The strikes targeted what the military described as Hezbollah’s military infrastructure, accusing the group of rebuilding its capabilities nearly a year after a U.S.-brokered ceasefire. Lebanon’s health ministry reported one civilian wounded as a result of the strikes, though most residents reportedly evacuated the threatened areas. This escalation follows a period of increased cross-border fire that threatens to destabilize the region further.
“We will not allow Hezbollah to rearm themselves, to recover, build back up its strength to threaten the state of Israel,” stated Israeli government spokesperson Shosh Bedrosian during a briefing. Simultaneously, Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam and his government convened in Beirut to discuss a plan to disarm Hezbollah and other non-state armed groups, a long-standing demand from international actors like the U.S. State Department. Hezbollah, however, has vowed to continue fighting regardless of its capabilities, as stated by its leader Sheikh Naim Kassem.
The current conflict began after the October 7, 2023, attacks on Israel and has resulted in over 270 deaths and 850 injuries in Lebanon, with 107 of those killed verified as civilians by the U.N. human rights office as of October 9th. No Israelis have been killed by fire from Lebanon since the ceasefire. The U.S. Treasury also announced new sanctions today targeting financial operatives facilitating funds from Iran to Hezbollah, aiming to disrupt the group’s financial network – you can read more about those sanctions here.
Officials indicate that Israel will continue to target Hezbollah infrastructure, while Lebanon continues to seek a negotiated resolution to the ongoing tensions.
