Al Horford Cites Championship Pursuit, Uncertainty with Tatum Injury in Move to Warriors
Veteran forward Al Horford signed with the Golden State Warriors late last month after a lengthy and successful run with the Boston Celtics, citing a desire to contend for another championship and concerns stemming from Jayson Tatum’s Achilles rupture as key factors in his decision.
Horford, 39, explained in a recent interview with The Athletic that while financial considerations played a role, the primary driver was the opportunity to compete at a high level. He specifically referenced the uncertainty surrounding Tatum’s recovery timeline as influencing his choice. “There [were] two things there,” Horford said. “I think the financial part was a component, but more than that, it was the winning part of it, trying to contend for a championship… JT getting hurt, that takes a big toll.”
The five-time All-Star also indicated that the Celtics’ offseason moves – including the trades of Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis – signaled a shift in team priorities. He described the situation as having a “domino effect” on his thinking, leading him to believe Boston was no longer aligned with his goals. “Once that offseason happened and it started to progress, it became clear to me the team had different priorities,” Horford stated. This decision comes as teams prepare for the 2025-26 NBA season.
Horford initially joined the Celtics in 2016 and returned via trade in 2021, playing a vital role in their 2024 championship run. He believes Golden State represents his best chance at adding another title to his resume and indicated it will likely be his final team. The Celtics, meanwhile, are navigating a rebuilding phase following significant roster changes, and will look to Tatum’s return to lead the team.
Horford is expected to join the Warriors for training camp, and team officials have stated they are excited to add his experience and leadership to the roster.
