A modern picture book designed to spark conversation and memory in individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia is now available. Created by Marion Dejean, a resident of Léojac, France, “Mon livre d’images” (My Picture Book) aims to provide a concrete support for those living with cognitive decline by using images to stimulate recall and dialogue.

Dejean, who is likewise an aide-soignante (nurse’s aide) in a specialized care facility, developed the book based on both her professional experience and her personal connection to her grandmother’s experience with the disease. “I couldn’t find an imagier (picture book) that suited my needs, so I decided to create the layout myself using attractive photographs rather than engravings, giving the image the purity essential for restoring memories,” she explained.

Creating Connection

The book, designed for individuals with Alzheimer’s or memory disorders – even those in advanced stages – features a simple format with six familiar themes. Each page displays a single, clear, real-life image on a white background to minimize distraction. The book measures 21 x 21 centimeters, is spiral-bound for effortless handling, and uses a clear “stick” font for improved readability. The paper is also thick and smooth for easy cleaning.

Each photograph is paired with a prompt intended to initiate conversation. The primary goal of “Mon livre d’images” is to foster connection. Simple, familiar images can trigger memories, emotions, and sensations, potentially stimulating cognitive function, maintaining attention, and encouraging interaction. It can be used in family settings, assisted living facilities, day centers, or during professional therapy sessions. Even as memory fades, emotions and relationships remain, and this book seeks to nurture those bonds.
