Amazon Plans Major Corporate Job Cuts, Potentially Impacting 30,000 Roles

Amazon is preparing to implement significant job cuts affecting its corporate workforce as early as this week, a move signaling a broader restructuring within the tech giant.

The company reportedly plans to reduce its corporate headcount by as many as 30,000 employees, according to sources familiar with the matter. This potential reduction represents approximately 10% of Amazon’s 350,000 corporate employees, which include those in executive, managerial, and sales positions, as reported in filings with the US government last year. While a substantial number, these cuts would still represent a small fraction of Amazon’s total global workforce of over 1.5 million people, many of whom work in the company’s vast warehouse and logistics network.

Chief Executive Andy Jassy has been focused on cost-cutting measures as Amazon invests heavily in artificial intelligence (AI) to improve efficiency. In June, Jassy stated, “We will need fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today, and more people doing other types of jobs,” foreshadowing potential workforce adjustments as AI takes on more routine tasks. This shift reflects a trend across the tech industry, where companies are increasingly leveraging AI to streamline operations and reduce costs – a move that could reshape the future of work. Amazon declined to comment on the reports. These potential layoffs would be the largest since 2022, when the company eliminated around 27,000 positions over several months. You can learn more about Amazon’s previous restructuring efforts here.

Company officials have indicated that further details regarding the scope and timing of the cuts will be released in the coming days.
