‘Wicked: For Good’ Generating Oscar Buzz Following Early Reactions

Early reactions to Universal Pictures’ “Wicked: For Good” are overwhelmingly positive, suggesting the film is poised to be a major contender at the upcoming Academy Awards.

Directed by Jon M. Chu and starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, the film continues the story begun in the 2024 adaptation of the hit Broadway musical. Critics who have seen the film are praising the performances, direction, and emotional depth of the sequel. Destiny Jackson, an awards writer, described the film as “an epic and heartbreakingly tender conclusion” to the saga, noting “a lot for fans of the Broadway show to love.”

Variety’s Jazz Tangcay lauded Chu’s direction, stating he is “a genius” and calling Grande’s performance a “tour de force.” The film’s technical aspects, including costume design and cinematography, are also receiving significant attention, potentially securing nominations in those categories. A strong showing at the Oscars could further solidify the film’s place in popular culture and boost the careers of its stars.

Notably, if both Erivo and Grande receive nominations for their roles, they would join a select group of actors recognized twice for portraying the same characters. Erivo has already made history as the second Black woman to receive multiple best actress nominations, and a win could further break barriers in the industry, as reported by The Academy. The film builds upon the original stage play, adding new songs and expanding the world of Oz, and could be a frontrunner for a Best Picture nomination.

Awards season officially kicks off in the coming months, with the Golden Globes and other ceremonies paving the way for the Academy Awards nominations in January.
