No. 13 Arizona Wildcats Open Season Against Defending Champion Florida Gators in Las Vegas
The Arizona Wildcats basketball team will begin its 2025-26 season against the No. 3 ranked and defending NCAA champion Florida Gators today in Las Vegas, marking a challenging start to the year for the No. 13 Wildcats.
The game, taking place at T-Mobile Arena as part of a doubleheader, will be Arizona’s first season opener away from McKale Center since 2016. Head coach Tommy Lloyd emphasized the significance of the matchup, stating, “I’m sure there will be a lot of eyes and interested parties watching.” This early-season test against a top opponent could significantly impact Arizona’s ranking and tournament seeding later in the season.
Lloyd noted the team’s readiness, highlighting a freshman class ranked No. 2 nationally and the polished play of freshman guard Brayden Burries during preseason exhibitions. “He’s a dynamic offensive player,” Lloyd said of Burries, “I see him as a guy that, when the ball is in his hands, he’s going to make the right decision for the team.” Arizona hasn’t lost a season opener since 2006, but this will be their toughest opening challenge in decades. Florida returns its entire frontcourt, led by preseason All-American Alex Condon, despite losing three starters from its championship team. Lloyd, who has a history with Florida coach Todd Golden from their time in the West Coast Conference, expressed respect for Golden’s coaching ability. Arizona is 9-2 all-time at T-Mobile Arena, often referred to as “McKale North” by fans. For more on the Arizona Wildcats, visit the official Arizona Athletics website.
Coaches anticipate a strong fan turnout, with both Arizona and BYU expected to have significant support in the crowd, and Lloyd stated he will evaluate the game as a part of the larger season journey.
