Everett Arson Suspect Returned to Massachusetts After Alabama Arrest
A 27-year-old man accused of setting a fire that caused an estimated $500,000 in damage to an Everett apartment complex earlier this month has been returned to Massachusetts following his arrest in Alabama.
Lawrence Stockton is accused of arson in connection with the Oct. 5 fire reported at 1:45 a.m. on the sixth floor of 25 Charlton St., known as The Batch Yard. Residents Gabriella and Josh Cortes described a frightening evacuation, and were later told by building management that the fire was not accidental. “They think that the arsonist came in with gasoline, soaked our hallway two doors down from us in front of Unit 613 and was just planning to set the whole hallway and that unit on fire,” Gabriella Cortes said. The incident displaced numerous residents and caused significant water, fire, and smoke damage to the over 200-unit building.
Stockton was apprehended on the evening of Oct. 10 in Leeds, Alabama, east of Birmingham, after investigators followed leads and obtained an arrest warrant. The quick capture highlights the importance of interstate cooperation in addressing serious crimes. Everett Police Chief Paul Strong praised the collaborative effort, stating, “This arrest is the result of exceptional teamwork and determination by our investigators and partner agencies. Fires of this nature put countless lives at risk, and our priority from the very beginning was to identify and apprehend the person responsible. I commend everyone involved for their swift, coordinated efforts.”
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities are asking anyone with information to contact the Everett Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Unit. More information about the Everett Police Department can be found on the state website. Arson is a serious crime with potentially devastating consequences, and investigations like this are crucial for public safety, according to the National Fire Protection Association.
Officials stated today, 2025-10-20 22:12:00, that the investigation is continuing as Stockton is processed and prepared for arraignment.
