A late surge in polling numbers has put the Green Party in a statistical tie with the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) just days before the state election in Baden-Württemberg. The latest “ZDF-Politbarometer Extra” poll reveals a tightening race that could reshape the political landscape of the region.

Both parties now stand at 28 percent support, according to the researchers. The Green Party, led by Cem Özdemir, has gained ground in voter preference, closing the gap with the CDU, which has held a lead for months.

32 Prozent noch unentschlossen

The Green Party was at 25 percent in the Forschungsgruppe Wahlen “Politbarometer” survey last Friday. The CDU, with Manuel Hagel as its leading candidate, also saw a one-percentage-point increase compared to the previous week. For months, the CDU had consistently held a significant advantage over the Greens, who are currently represented by Winfried Kretschmann as the state’s governor. Kretschmann will not be seeking reelection. With the election approaching, shifts in voter sentiment are still possible: 32 percent of those surveyed remain undecided about how they will vote.

FDP und Linke müssen zittern

The representative survey by ZDF questioned 1,069 eligible voters in Baden-Württemberg between March 4 and March 5. The FDP and Linke parties are facing a precarious situation: while the SPD lost another point and fell to 8 percent, both parties are hovering just above the 5 percent threshold with 5.5 percent support. The AfD is currently in third place with 18 percent.

The Green and CDU parties have governed together since 2016. When voters were asked who they would prefer as Minister President, 47 percent chose Özdemir. Hagel received 24 percent and Markus Frohnmaier of the AfD received 8 percent. The outcome of this election could significantly alter the governing coalition in Baden-Württemberg.
