Following a recent Champions league victory, the focus at Real Madrid has shifted from on-field performance to team morale adn fan support. A 6-1 win against Monaco saw a resurgent Vinícius Júnior deliver a standout performance, but comes after a period of internal friction stemming from underwhelming results and critical fan reaction towards both Vinícius and teammate Jude Bellingham. The club, now under new manager Álvaro Arbeloa, is seeking to recapture it’s winning form with renewed emphasis on unity and positive atmosphere within the Santiago Bernabéu stadium.
Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham urged fans to show “love” for teammate Vinícius Júnior and the rest of the squad to unlock their full potential, following the Spanish club’s dominant 6-1 victory over Monaco in Champions League play.
Vinícius delivered one of his most impactful performances of the season, scoring a goal and directly contributing to three others, just days after being jeered by Real Madrid supporters during a La Liga match against Levante.
The fans’ frustration with Vinícius and, particularly, Bellingham, as well as the team overall, followed a string of underwhelming results that led to the dismissal of manager Xabi Alonso and Real Madrid’s elimination from the Copa del Rey.
“He was really sharp, dangerous every time he got the ball, creating a lot of chances,” Bellingham told TNT Sports about Vinícius.
The England international added, “I think he’s a player who thrives off the love, and you can see that [against Monaco] when the atmosphere changes towards him, his level goes up massively and it’s more enjoyable to watch and play alongside him. I think the whistles put pressure on a player, but he seems a little bit freer now, and hopefully he can continue like that.”
Bellingham also defended himself against the crowd’s criticism, stating, “Playing a game against Levante with the tension with the fans was a difficult experience for him.”
He explained that “I’ve always said the fans pay money, work all week, and save money to come to Real Madrid games to support us. They have the right to say what they want, (but) I don’t think it’s always helpful for the team or the individuals, and from my experience now, I know it’s not the best feeling in the world, but of course they have the right to give their opinions.”
Bellingham capped off the convincing win over Monaco with a late goal.
New Real Madrid manager Álvaro Arbeloa said he was “very happy” for Vinícius Júnior, who received a standing ovation from the crowd at Santiago Bernabéu stadium on Tuesday after the resounding victory against Monaco.
Speaking about his Brazilian winger, Arbeloa said, “I am very happy for him because he deserves it. He deserves the embrace of all his teammates, and he deserves the ovation from the Bernabéu.”
The coach added, “I didn’t tell him anything other than that we need him 100%, and that he’s going to be a very important player. I want him to be happy and focused on his game. I want him to enjoy himself, and to know that he has my full confidence to show the football he has, almost obliged to unleash all the magic he has.”
Arbeloa, who replaced Xabi Alonso on January 12, believes Real Madrid is among the contenders in the Champions League. “I think Real Madrid is always a candidate to win everything, wherever the competition is. There are great teams and the road is still long, but it’s Real Madrid, and will always be the first candidate in this competition,” he said.
