Badan Meteorologi, Klimatologi, dan Geofisika (BMKG) ended the tsunami warning following a magnitude 7.7 earthquake off the coast of Mindanao, Philippines, on June 8, 2026, as reported by BMKG. The quake, which struck at 06:37 WIB, triggered coastal alerts in Indonesia, with sea level rises recorded in regions like Loloda, Ulu Siau, and Melonguane. BMKG confirmed the warning ended at 10:15:51 WIB, citing no further significant risks. Meanwhile, the Philippines reported 41 fatalities and 479 injuries, per detikNews.

The M7.7 earthquake, centered 244 km northwest of Karatung, North Sulawesi, at a depth of 47 km, was classified as a shallow thrust fault event by BMKG. The agency noted sea level increases of up to 0.45 meters in Paleleh and 0.32 meters in Tanjung Sidupa, though no major damage was reported in Indonesia. “BMKG confirms the tsunami warning has ended, and no further significant sea level rises are expected,” said BMKG head Teuku Faisal Fathani, as per BMKG. The quake, however, caused tremors felt across Indonesia, with intensities ranging from III to VI MMI in regions like Miangas, Melonguane, and Manado.

“Hingga pukul 10.00 WIB, hasil monitoring BMKG menunjukkan adanya 20 aktivitas gempa bumi susulan (aftershock) dengan magnitudo terbesar 3.9–6.7,” said Deputi Bidang Geofisika Nelly Florida R., according to BMKG. These aftershocks, including a magnitude 6.7 event, raised concerns but did not trigger additional warnings.

Indonesian Islands Experience Tremors and Damage

While the Philippines faced severe casualties, Indonesia’s northern islands, particularly Sangihe and Talaud, reported structural damage. The North Sulawesi Provincial Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) documented over 250 buildings damaged, including homes, churches, and schools, with Sangihe province bearing the brunt. “Total di kedua kabupaten ada 250-an bangunan rusak. Kerusakan terjadi pada rumah warga, bangunan gereja, sekolah, dan perkantoran,” said BPBD head Adolf Tumengkel, as cited in Kompas.id.

Residents in Sangihe’s Matutuang village described ongoing aftershocks disrupting recovery efforts. “Sampai pagi masih terasa terus ada gempa. Banyak rumah yang semula rusak ringan, jadi rusak berat,” said Recksan Salur, a village secretary, per Kompas.id. Over 1,160 people remained displaced, with access to affected islands hampered by damaged infrastructure and communication outages.

Philippines Grapples With Catastrophic Aftermath

The Philippine earthquake left 41 dead and 479 injured, according to detikNews. General Santos City and Cotabato provinces were among the hardest hit, with reports of collapsed buildings, power outages, and landslides. The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) confirmed 4 people missing, as the search for survivors continued. “Korban tewas juga tercatat di wilayah Davao,” said OCD spokesperson Junie Castillo, per detikNews.

The quake also damaged 9 bridges and 19 road segments, with 1,889 homes partially or fully destroyed.
